Check out home and garden ideas at the Birmingham Home Show next February

There’s a whole lot you can do with your home, ranging from improvement, décor, cooking and other ideas. In fact, you could look at your own home as a sort of canvas where you can shape your space as you see fit. But what if you need some more ideas? There’s an almost endless supply of options for all the neat stuff you can do with your home, especially when it comes to not only keeping it looking good but keeping it in tip top shape.

You can find plenty of DIY ideas online but then again you might want to look into the different shows that you can attend in person. That’s one of the things that makes a home show so worth going to, especially if they’re big time events. The sight of one of these shows may be almost overwhelming for some, with the vast space of vendors advertising their products and ideas. But if home improvement and decoration is something you’re really into, then it’s like being a kid on Christmas.

If all of that sounds like it’s right up your alley you might want to consider going to the Birmingham Home Show at the BJCC in February next year. This will be a three-day event, going from February 14 to 16. Those who are active or retired military veterans and first responders can actually get in for free on “Hero Day,” which will be on the 14th. They will have to present a valid ID to get in. On the next day will be “Teacher Day” where educators and school employees can get in for free with a valid ID as well.

The show will have a marketplace where vendors will show off giftware items for those interested in patronizing them. Additionally, there’ll be a “fresh ideas stage” with home and garden experts will give presentations. Cooking demonstrations will also be part of the show.

Watch dogs do ballet in “The Mutt-Cracker” on November 29

Have you ever wanted to see a dog do a ballet in a tutu? Well, maybe they don’t do ballet the way that a human would but they can certainly do the dog version of it, so if that has your attention then Birmingham Ballet’s “The Mutt-Cracker” may be of interest as it’s coming up on November 29. In fact, “The Mutt-Cracker” has caught the world’s attention, with it being featured on Inside Edition, as well as the Chicago Tribune, USA TODAY, and The UK Telegraph.

“The Mutt-Cracker” is a production of the classic performance, “The Nutcracker”, only with dogs as you can see. The ballet performance has been adapted to the stage time and again and is considered one of the most memorable Christmas stories in the world. Birmingham Ballet will be putting on the version choreographed by George Balanchine. It is one of the few companies in the world that is licensed by Balanchine Trust to perform it. But the dogs in “The Mutt-Cracker” are not the only feature of the production. They are accompanied by professional and aspiring dancers performing the story on stage. “The Mutt-Cracker” features costumes and music along with dancing that captures the spirit of the holiday season.

One of the canine guests in past performances of “The Mutt-Cracker” is Pig, a dog with short spine syndrome that has made waves in the news for the past several years. Pig was featured in a production of the performance in an episode of Inside Edition.

So if all of that sounds right up your alley, come see the performance on November 29. Birmingham Ballet is at 2198 Columbiana Road in Vestavia Hills. Tickets are $30 to $45 and over.

Getting Fit! Top Running Tracks Near Downtown Birmingham

Craving for some outdoor fun to burn some of those extra calories? If so, check out some of the best running tracks near downtown Birmingham below.

Jemison Trail

Jemison trail is a concrete path through the Mountain Brook neighborhood that is incorporated into the 54-acre Jemison Linear Park. Having the scenic Shades Creek alongside it, it’s surely one of the prettiest runs around Birmingham you wouldn’t wanna miss.

A central starting point for runners is at the intersection of Cahaba Road and Mountain Brook Parkway which is about 5 miles southeast of downtown. Then you may want to run east along Mountain Brook Parkway, Overbrook Road, Beechwood Road, and Old Leeds Road until you reach the path break at Stone River Road.

Shades Creek Greenway (Lakeshore Trail)

Most commonly known as Lakeshore Trail, the Shades Creek Greenway is located along Homewood’s Lakeshore and is a 2.5 mile paved multi-use path that is free from Birmingham’s busy traffic. What’s even more great about this running trail is that it runs throughout the lush floodplain of Shades Creek.

Homewood Neighborhood

One of the prettiest neighborhoods in Birmingham is Homewood, which is south of downtown, is a perfect spot for a great run. With its beautiful sidewalks, cute homes, and lovely parks, you’re sure to love it even more as you go through its streets.

The best stretches in the neighborhood include Oxmoor Road and Broadway Street but don’t get me wrong, most streets in the area are great for a run.

Kiwanis Vulcan Trail

Despite the fact that the Vulcan Trail is only 2 miles long, this is one of the most popular running ground around Birmingham. The running trail starts at the Red Mountain Terrace on the west end and runs east to Vulcan Park and Museum.

Railroad Park and University

Though not as big as other running trails, Railroad Park has a lot to offer. It is considered as one of the most fun running grounds around Birmingham with its green walkways, train spotting opportunities, and an amazing LED tunnel. For those wanting extra mileage, they can extend their route south towards UAB.

Ross Bridge Neighborhood and Greenway

The upscale neighborhood of Ross Bridge is standing proud with its collection of grand houses. It’s a perfect option for runners who like to run on asphalt in suburban areas away from the city’s hustle. Here you will also find Ross Bridge Greenway which is a 2.7-mile multi-use path.

Are you excited for this year’s Trussville City Fest? Well, you better be because this year’s fest is gonna be better than ever. Why? Read on to learn more.

What is Trussville City Fest?

Trussville City Fest, once known as Dog Daze, is a fun-filled family event held each year in downtown Trussville. This year, this festival is turning 40 years old.

The festival will be held on Saturday, May 4th and will begin at 11 am until 7 pm. That’s plenty of time to enjoy the fun with the whole family.

What to expect in this year’s Trussville City Fest?

The past years’ festival had been filled with music featuring local performers. This year, aside from these amazing performances, the organizers have decided to offer something new and exciting which is an Annual Battle of the Bands. So, if you’re into this kind of competition, better get a spot and rock Trussville City Fest with your band’s awesome music. Prizes will be given to the top three contenders. But you need to hurry as the deadline for applications is on April 12.

The Battle of the Bands will be this year’s highlight but you’re sure to enjoy a whole lot more of the fun-filled activities during the event.

If you’ve been around Alabama, you may have already heard about the Gardendale Magnolia Festival. But do you know what this festival is all about? Did you know that this fun-filled festival is held each year for a good cause? Well, if you don’t yet, better read on to learn more and you’ll be surprised.

What is Gardendale Magnolia Festival?

A spring celebration that takes place annually during weekends at the Gardendale Civic Center, Gardendale Magnolia Festival is one of those much-awaited spring events in the area.

Year after year, the Gardendale Magnolia Festival provides locals with an economical, family-friendly experience while promoting local business and culture. What makes this festival even better is that it awards college scholarships to local high school seniors, as well as provides support to local charities.

The festival highly promotes volunteerism and they believe that teaching children the importance of it at an early age is a must. In fact, every year, the festival recognizes two Volunteers of the Year – one student and one adult. Isn’t that awesome?

What to expect at the Gardendale Magnolia Festival?

Expect a fun-filled carnival experience at the Gardendale Magnolia Festival that is perfect for everyone. The organizers even call the event “The Total Family Experience” because it provides activities and entertainment for all ages in a family-friendly environment.

Children will certainly have fun with a lot of rides to choose from. They can even take free art classes while moms can get their shopping fix in with 150+ arts and crafts/business booths. Of course, the festival does have something for dads too. They can watch and enjoy the Classic Car Show while the whole family will surely dance to the beats of bluegrass bands, as well as other genres on three stages of live musical entertainment.

The festival also features a pooch Parade to rival Do Dah Day, eating contests, and a lot of yummy foods like fried Oreos, funnel cake, shrimp po’boys, Philly cheese steaks, kettle corn, and Cajun pistolettes. Tired and thirsty? Sip on a tall glass of fresh squeezed lemonade! Try them all if you can. We promise this local festival won’t disappoint.
